Lt Col David M. Kirkwood, USMCR, Ret., aka Coach K is the owner of Sports Academy Gymnastics which was established in April of 1995. Not only did Coach K retire from the Marine Corps in December of 1994, but he also served in the United States Army Special Forces (Green Berets) from 1967 to 1970. Coach K served a tour of duty in Vietnam as a Combat Demolitions Specialist with Detachment A-415, 5th Special Forces Group, Airborne. During his tour of duty, Coach K was a recipient of the Silver Star for valor.

He is a former college athlete (basketball and track) at Anderson College (Indiana) 1967-1968, 1970-1972 and a graduate of Ball State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and Health, 1974. Coach K has over 45 years of experience in the gymnastics industry, co-owner Gymnastics Unlimited, Beaufort, SC 1976-1983, Assistant Women’s Gymnastics and Volleyball Coach, George Washington University,1983-1984. Coach K is married to Victoria C. Kirkwood, sons Peter and Jame from his previous marriage and 7 grandchildren. His hobbies are coaching the Sports Academy’s girls competitive gymnastics team, the Sparklers and Golfing.
